New Return-to-Terminal Route Now Open at Jackson Gap Street

Home

DENVER – July 14, 2021 – Today, Denver International Airport (DEN) reached another milestone on the Peña Boulevard improvement project with the opening of the new Return-to-Terminal route, which requires motorists to travel to Jackson Gap Street to access the new free-flow loop when returning to the Jeppesen Terminal.

The new Return-to-Terminal loop will simplify the route for traffic returning to the terminal and improve the flow of traffic on Jackson Gap Street and Peña Boulevard. After completing the loop at Jackson Gap Street, vehicles will utilize the new dedicated travel lane to merge onto inbound Peña Boulevard. View the video to see how to navigate the new Return-to-Terminal route.

Motorists picking up passengers are still encouraged to wait at Final Approach (the cell phone lot), until their party has retrieved their luggage and are ready for pick-up. Dining options, a gas station, restrooms, and free wi-fi are available at Final Approach, as well as flight information screens. The lot is located approximately three miles west of the Jeppesen Terminal and can easily be accessed via eastbound Peña Boulevard to 75th Avenue and northbound Gun Club Road; westbound Peña Boulevard to Wenatchee Street; or from East 78th Avenue. Directional signs are posted along Peña Boulevard.

As a reminder, parking anywhere along Peña Boulevard or associated side streets is not allowed. The shoulders should always be kept clear for emergency services.

In addition to the new Return-to-Terminal route, inbound Peña Boulevard now has three through lanes between Jackson Gap Street and the Terminal, as well as two dedicated travel lanes from the Jackson Gap Street on-ramp. These acceleration/deceleration lanes improve safety and traffic flow by eliminating weaving patterns due to merging traffic. Other benefits of this $30 million improvement project include:

  • Improving traffic flow to accommodate current and future growth of the airport
  • Improving safety for the traveling public by reducing weaving patterns near the terminal
  • Improving routes for ground transportation providers and rental car shuttles
  • Replacing aging infrastructure that is over 25-years old

The majority of the project will be completed by mid-August, with minor work continuing through September 2021. Motorists can continue to expect single and double lane closures through September from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.
