Five Doggone Good Years of the CATS Program

Denver International Airport’s pet therapy program, the largest in the country

DENVER – Oct. 29, 2020 – They’re furry, they’re cute and they are a part of the most “pupular” program at Denver International Airport (DEN). The CATS (Canine Airport Therapy Squad) officially turned five today (that’s 35 in dog years)!

CATS stroll around DEN’s three concourses in their trademark “Pet Me” vests walking with their handlers and getting snuggled by passengers. Since 2015, they have contributed more than 10,000 hours of volunteer service at DEN. While the CATS program has been on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, some CATS teams will be returning to the airport before the end of the year.

“Our CATS have soothed and comforted countless travelers and employees over the last five years, bringing smiles to faces at DEN” said DEN CEO Kim Day. “They have an amazing sense of where they are needed, and we have repeatedly heard stories of a CATS member who made a beeline for a passenger who needed comfort. We are grateful to our CATS volunteers and look forward to many more years of this ‘pawsitively’ amazing program.”

Passenger feedback from the program over the years has made it clear the DEN CATS have become secret weapons against the stress of traveling – whether passengers are running late or feeling anxious about getting in the air. Over the past five years, DEN has continued to add CATS team members and now boasts one of the largest airport therapy animal programs in the country with 96 active members. Current animals range in size from Raco the Fox Terrier (a trim nine pounds) to Elle the Irish Wolf Hound (a “pony-like” 148 pounds), and of course there is Xeli, the only feline member of the program.

CATS Teams also work in the community as DEN ambassadors to the Craig Hospital Spinal and Brain injury department, Greenwood Elementary School near DEN and at events like the Dumb Friends League’s annual Furry Scurry and Denver Human Services’ National Adoption Day. It seems wherever a friendly nuzzle is needed, a CATS Team is sure to be nearby.

For the CATS five-year anniversary, DEN is showing off some hidden talents on the CATS team and we want to see what tricks your pet has up his sleeve. Check out the DEN Facebook page to learn about how you can win! More information about the contest is available at: https://fru-staging.flydenver.com/contestrules
