DENVER – June 16, 2020 – Today, Denver International Airport (DEN) welcomed the return of international flights since the COVID-19 pandemic began disrupting air travel; DEN’s last international flight operated on April 1. Mexico-based Volaris is now operating service between Denver and Guadalajara (GDL) for those with essential or repatriation needs.
“We are excited to welcome back our first foreign-flag carrier, Volaris, as air travel begins to increase following impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said airport CEO Kim Day. “It is an important milestone in our recovery process. We have implemented a number of measures to keep passengers and employees safe and look forward to welcoming international passengers once again.”
Flights between Denver and Guadalajara will operate two days per week. Volaris expects to continue to operate service between the two cities through the rest of the year and anticipates resuming nonstop flights from Denver to Mexico City and Chihuahua as conditions improve.
“Volaris is following closely the recommendations issued by the World Health Organization and IATA to ensure the wellbeing of our Clients and Crew amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We were the first ULCC in Mexico to issue a specific biosecurity protocol that covers all the stages of the journey of our Clients to bring them peace of mind while flying to reunite with loved ones or reactivating business. We are also offering affordable prices and flexibility for unlimited changes in their travel plans,” said Volaris Chief Commercial Officer Carolyn Prowse.
Volaris last operated at DEN on March 31, with a flight to Mexico City; the airline’s service to GDL last operated on March 28. The last nonstop international service to operate at Denver was an Air Canada flight to Vancouver (YVR) on April 1. During the past 75 days, DEN has not been connected nonstop with another country.
Non-essential travel to Mexico is suspended through July 21, and most countries have travel restrictions in place. DEN anticipates additional international service to resume as governments lift restrictions and demand for international travel returns.
Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. DEN is the primary economic engine for the state of Colorado, generating more than $36 billion for the region annually.
