Denver International Airport Partners with Local Nonprofit We Don’t Waste to Donate Excess Food to Hungry Coloradans

Home

DENVER – Dec. 16, 2019 – Denver International Airport (DEN) has partnered with local nonprofit We Don’t Waste to expand its food donation program. The partnership allows DEN concessionaires to donate more excess food items such as prepared entrees, side dishes, prepackaged salads and sandwiches, sealed beverages, condiment packets, and canned goods, while expanding the program to allow even more items to be donated.

DEN launched its food donation program in 2015 and has since collected and donated over 445,000 pounds of unsold food to hungry Colorado families and individuals. Seventeen shops and restaurants at the airport are currently participating in this program in addition to the three flight kitchens operating at DEN – United Catering, LSG Sky Chefs and Southwest Provisioning. The new partnership with We Don’t Waste allows even more food items to be diverted from the landfill, including sweets, desserts and bottled soda.

“We are proud to partner with We Don’t Waste and with many of our restaurants and food service concessionaires to provide high-quality food to people in need,” said airport CEO Kim Day. “These donations aid a worthy hunger relief effort that supports our community, while also supporting our commitment to reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill.”

Participating restaurants store leftover food items in coolers on each concourse. Food items are then picked up on a regular basis by We Don’t Waste for distribution. Donations must meet food quality and safety standards, and participating concessions may also see tax benefits from donated items.

“We’re excited to expand our food recovery operations to include the airport, which is a city in itself–meaning that the potential for impact is huge,” said Arlan Preblud, Founder and Executive Director of We Don’t Waste. “With one in six Colorado children experiencing food insecurity, we know that this food will make a difference for many families.”
