DENVER – July 21, 2022 – Denver International Airport (DEN) has teamed up with the Denver Colfax Marathon to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a sunrise 5K run on one of DEN’s six runways. The event will be held on September 10 at 6 a.m., and registration is now open.
“This is the first time in the airport’s history that we have held an event like this on the airfield,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “We are excited to offer this unique experience for the community to see DEN from a different perspective while enjoying the beauty of our airport and the surrounding landscape.”
Those who want to participate are encouraged to register now as space is limited. The first 500 runners to register for the race get a pair of branded aviators. You must be 8 years of age or older to participate, and all participants must be off the runway within one hour of the start of the race. Registration is $49 for adults and $39 for youth ages 8-17. Parking is included.
“This 5K is a great compliment to our Denver Colfax Marathon weekend,” said Andrea Dowdy, Denver Colfax Marathon CEO. “We’re thrilled to offer runners and joggers the chance to make history. A 5K on the Runway is such an inspiring feeling for runners, with the sun rising over the spectacular Colorado mountains. We know runners will love the chance to be the first and proudly wear the ‘I-Made-History airplane medal.’”
United Airlines is the presenting sponsor of the event and will host a post-race breakfast and other festivities at the United hangar. Participants will also receive runway-themed shirt, airplane medal, and free runner photos.
DEN is working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration and its airline partners to ensure operations at DEN will not be impacted during the event. DEN’s six runways give the airport the ability to temporarily close runways and still have the capacity needed to operate normally. Additionally, the race will begin at 6 a.m., with all participants off the runway by 7 a.m., allowing DEN to resume full operations in time for the morning peak of flights starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
