DENVER – Nov. 10, 2022 – Denver International Airport’s (DEN) latest art exhibition honors Ed Dwight, the United States’ first Black astronaut candidate who carved out a legacy as one of the American West’s greatest sculptors.
“Ed Dwight: Soaring on the Wings of a Dream,” tells the tale of Ed Dwight, Denver entrepreneur, restauranteur, developer, and artist, through photographs, artifacts, bronze sculptures, and a documentary film.
The exhibition was unveiled at an event honoring Ed Dwight alongside Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock, DEN CEO Phil Washington and United President Brett Hart. The event highlighted Dwight’s lifelong legacy. Watch a recap video of the event by clicking the image below.
In honor of Ed Dwight’s many achievements, Mayor Hancock officially proclaimed Nov. 4 as Ed Dwight Day. United’s Brett Hart named the former astronaut candidate an honorary Captain.
“Ed Dwight: Soaring on the Wings of a Dream,” spotlights Dwight’s ambitious creative mission and his commitment to exploring the untold and overlooked aspects of Black American history. His sculpture work includes the series “Black Frontier Spirit in the American West” and “Jazz: An American Art Form.” Several pieces from each series are included in this exhibition. Monuments and sculptural memorials are the crescendo pieces of Ed’s artistic career. Dwight has created more than 130 memorials across the country honoring hidden figures of Black history. His work is found in museums, parks, and historic sites across the country.
