DEN CEO Phil Washington Honored with Engineering Industry Recognition

Home

DENVER – April 12, 2024 – Denver International Airport (DEN) CEO Phil Washington has been named an Engineering News-Record (ENR) Top 25 Newsmaker of 2023 for his founding of the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) and efforts to increase infrastructure contracting opportunities for historically underutilized businesses.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition and to be in such exceptional company,” said Washington. “I’m incredibly proud of EIP and our growing coalition which now includes 56 public and private organizations committed to our mission of building generational wealth and reducing the racial wealth gap by creating more prime, joint venture and equity contracting opportunities for historically underutilized businesses. At DEN, and across the county, it’s vitally important that investments in infrastructure are focused on both projects and people.”

EIP was created in anticipation of the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, to advance President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative and his executive order 13985 on Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities pledging to increase by 2026 the share of federal contracts that go to small and disadvantaged businesses. EIP calls on federal, state, and local governments as well as non-governmental organizations to achieve its mission.

According to ENR, this year’s ENR Top 25 Newsmakers, who are chosen by ENR editors, “are the ones who come up with solutions. In many of their stories, colleagues say the Newsmaker is the only one who could have gotten the job done. But the way Newsmakers have done it is by bringing people together: listening, communicating and galvanizing everyone to apply their most intense efforts and work as one team.”

Washington was also recognized at a Top 25 Newsmaker in 2014 for his work at the Regional Transportation District on the FasTracks program.

ENR provides engineering and construction news, analysis, commentary and data for the construction industry. Washington received his award at ENR’s Award of Excellence gala on April 11 in New York City. More information about the Top 25 Newsmakers can be found here.
