About the Artist, Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel

Milestones Project is a nonprofit initiative designed to help parents teach their children to value and respect people who are different from themselves. Since its inception in 1998, Littleton, CO based photographers Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel have traveled the world and have taken more than 70,000 award-winning photographs of the world’s children experiencing milestones of childhood. The Milestones Project’s photographs celebrate childhood around the world and tell the story about how we are all connected.
These photographs are now being reproduced in exhibits, books, and educational materials and have touched more than 200 million people worldwide. The project has been exhibited at 11 international airports and various other places around the world. The goal of the project is to show that no matter where we live or what we wear, we are all more alike than different.
