About Ed Dwight: Soaring on the Wings of a Dream

DEN Arts presents “Ed Dwight: Soaring on the Wings of a Dream”, the story of America’s first Black astronaut candidate turned sculptor.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Ed went on to join the United States Air Force after attending community college. While in the Air Force he received a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was later chosen by President Kennedy to be America’s first Black astronaut candidate. When President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Ed’s dreams of space travel went unfulfilled.
Ed left the Air Force and went on to lead a successful life as a developer and entrepreneur in the Denver area. In the late 1970s he revisited a childhood passion of art making. Since then, he has been focused on sculpting in bronze.
His sculpture work includes the series “Black Frontier Spirit in the American West” and “Jazz: An American Art Form”. Several pieces from each series are included in this exhibition. Monuments and sculptural memorials are the crescendo pieces of Ed’s artistic career. His work is found in museums, parks, and historic sites across the country.
Ed continually overcame adversity. Yet, he emphasizes the possibilities he was given throughout his life. He is a true Renaissance Man. Enjoy learning about a living legend here in Denver! For more information on Ed Dwight visit: www.eddwight.com
